When a stock is coated, it is covered in a thin layer of a compound that seals the porous surface of the paper. This compound is then buffed until it is glossy, creating a nice, smooth background for the ink to print on. Less ink is required when printing on a coated stock, since the coating prevents the paper from absorbing the ink.
Not all coated stocks have to look glossy. Possible coating finish styles include matte, gloss, satin, or soft-touch aqueous coating, as well as lamination or ultraviolet. Note than coating finishes may only be applied to coated stocks. Stocks marked “C1S” are coated on a single side, while “C2S” stocks are coated on both sides.

These uncoated stocks have a smooth texture without the use of a coating layer. Printing on uncoated stock requires a greater amount of ink, since the pores in the stock are not filled and can absorb more ink.
One benefit to using a smooth, uncoated stock is that your folder can easily be written on with an ink pen. These also tend to be the most eco-friendly stocks, as the lack of coating makes them recyclable or compostable, and several are made from 100% recycled materials.

Textured, uncoated stocks are designed to mimic the properties of other materials. In some cases, this means a strong, noticeable tactile pattern (such as with linen stocks), while in other cases, the texture is primarily visual (as is the case with fiber stocks).
These stocks are often used with embossing, as the thick fibers allow for a bolder embossed effect, both in look and feel. However, these stocks are not recommended for foil stamping because the texture makes it hard for the foil to stick to the paper. We also don’t recommend printing small text on these stocks, since the texture may absorb the ink and cause bleeds.
